Medieval garden of the Rocca di Angera

The medieval garden is the last novelty in the Fortress of Angera. The garden is organized in different sections: there are the officinal herbs, grown in the monasteries to heal the monks and the pilgrims, the aromatic plants, used for cooking and perfumes, the orchard, where trees bear small fruits compared to the big fruits we find today. The vineyards to provide wine for the castle (and in the castle there is a huge wine-press of the 17th Century). The profane garden of courtly love: it is the garden of the five senses: the murmur of a fountain, the song of the birds, the smell of ancient rose varieties. The garden also offers views to the outer part of the medieval fortress and the southern part of Lake Maggiore.
